Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

If you’re stuck on the side of the Spring roads or you’re in a parking lot, you’ll need to find another car that’s running. Once you’ve found another driver who’s willing to help you out, here is the proper way to jump-start your car:

  1. Make sure the car with a good battery is facing your car, and then turn the working car’s engine off.
  2. Make sure both vehicles’ parking brakes are engaged.
  3. Open the hoods and locate the batteries.
  4. Find the positive and negative terminal on each battery, making sure that they are free of any possible corrosion.
  5. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  6. Hook up the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery.
  7. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal on the working battery.
  8. Connect the last black clamp to the negative terminal of the dead battery.
  9. Once you have everything hooked up properly, start the working vehicle’s engine. Then, start the engine of the vehicle with the dead battery.
  10. After your car has been successfully jump-started, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order you put them on, and then shut off the other driver’s car.
  11. Keep your engine running for at least 10 minutes to allow the battery to charge up.

If you don’t have your own set of jumper cables or need a new battery, you can get the parts you need from our online parts store at Tom Peacock Nissan.

Other Battery Tips

If you find that your car won’t jump-start, then it could be an indication of a more serious issue. Here are some signs that it may be more than your battery:

  • Starting your car and only hearing a clicking sound could be an indication of your starter not functioning properly.
  • If your engine doesn’t turn over, but the electrical systems turn on, then this could be the result of a faulty ignition switch, battery, starter, fuse, or something else.
  • After you jump-start your car, be sure to keep your vehicle running about 10 minutes after. This way, you can ensure that the battery recharges.

If your car won’t jump-start or you experience other issues with your vehicle, schedule a visit with Tom Peacock Nissan in Houston to get your vehicle serviced right away.
